FAQs
WHAT IS EAGLES NEST?
The Nest is a small 65 acre tract of 124 privately owned Lots. The Campground owns the majority of these Lots and private owners have the rest. It began in 1970 as a recreational, resting, second-home type place. There are just four families that live off the highway frontage of the Nest.
We have converted the governing document of the nearly unsused subdivision into a Christian Charitable Trust Constitution. Much of the land in the Nest has been set aside for Charitable purposes.
WHERE IS EAGLES NEST AND WHAT IS IT LIKE?
The Nest is in the south-east corner of Texas known as the Big Thicket. No, not swamp. It is mostly forest. The Nest is about 70 miles North-east of downtown Houston and 60 miles north-west of Beaumont. It borders on the Trinity River about 15 miles below the Lake Livingston dam. A portion of the Big Thicket Preserve is nearby and the diversity of plants and animals is rare in the U.S. Much of the land in our area belongs to the large timber companies.
Our community is Ace. Yes, that's the name of the Post Office just across Highway 2610 from the Nest. Downtown Ace is made up of the Church of Ace and the Ace Post Office. The rest of us are back in the woods. If you look at a map of Texas, you will find Ace on the point of the arrow-shaped line (pointing east) of the Trinity River just downstream from Lake Livingston. Most of the Nest is made up of oaks, pines, hickory, magnolias, and dogwoods. The land is a high bluff overlooking the Trinity River. Two spring-fed creeks flow together and into the Trinity. The soil is sandy loam with a layer of red clay about 3 feet down. Gardeners will love how easy the soil is to work and it grows just about anything. You just have to find a spot out from under shade from the big trees.
IS THE NEST A PARK? A CAMPGROUND? A SUBDIVISION? OR WHAT?
Originally, the Nest was a small subdivision. The Nest is intended to be a Campground to allow Members to recreate and rest. Many other plans are in the works. Included in the plans are two restaurants, a narrow gauge railroad, a log lodge with a health club with heated pool, exercise room, and walking/jogging trails. Cabin sites, tent sites, a 5 acre lake for hand powered boating, and ministry sites including our intended long-term clinic, conference center, and K-12 school.
HOW DO WE GET TO USE EAGLES NEST?
By becoming Members or Shareholders. A yearly Membership is required of individuals, families, churches, and other groups. The yearly Membership costs $60.00. This gives the use of all facilities except those that are mostly indoors. We have some fees to cover expenses. These are FAR lower than the usual private campgrounds. Shareholders actually own a 1/100th portion of the Campground. The price for a Share is $5000.00. This gives the Shareholder a deduction in use fees as well as a possible seat on the Board of Trustees. One-hundred Memberships and one-hundred Shares are available.
TRUSTEES? WHAT ARE THEY? WHAT DO THEY DO?
Our governing document is a Constitution and is called a CHARITABLE TRUST. This means that the Trustees are responsible for all operations of the Nest for the benefit of all the Members, Shareholders, and Lot Owners. We planned it that way because the Trust is the closest form of government to the way the New Testament church was governed. The Executive Trustee will live on site and be responsible for the final decisions in all the things the Nest does. Trustees must be recommended by their pastors. There are seven Trustees. Each one will have a particular responsibility for the Nest operations. The Trustees make decisions based on the legal term -- Fiduciary. That's legaleez for one who performs for the benefit of others and not himself.
SOUNDS LIKE WE COULD BUY A LOT TO BUILD ON. RIGHT?
Right. There are a number of individuals that own Lots in the Nest. These Lots are priced from $1750 to $7500 depending on size and location. You will receive a Warranty Deed for the Lot upon full payment. You may receive a cash discount or we will finance and trade for the cost of a Lot. You may build a home or ministry office on these Lots. Some of the Lots will be used for Campground purposes and won't be available. There are deed restrictions and a yearly road fee of $25 per lot.
WE'RE RETIRED AND NEED SOME PRIVACY. CAN WE FIND IT AT THE NEST?
Since we are in a heavily forested area, you may not even see your neighbors' homes. But we are a friendly place and hope you will be too. There will be ministry things going on all over the Nest so it will be hard to stay uninvolved.
WHAT KIND OF CAMPGROUND ACTIVITIES DO YOU HAVE?
We plan on regular "church" type camps for Bible study and woods-lore camps for children, adults and youth. Our clinic will have homes for a number of disabled and dependent folks. Retirees needing daily nursing care will be provided for. We will sponsor singing groups, teaching ministries, and a school for K through 12th graders (see the ACADEMY page). We hope to get our clinic to have medical students on site.
IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF STUFF HASN'T BEEN BUILT YET. THAT'S SO?
Yes, that is so. Much of what the Nest is to do is in the planning stages as we wait on the Lord to provide. We won't be doing things that get us in debt. As funds are provided, we will build. Shareholders and Members may earn credits for hard labor and building materials traded to us. We'll even allow you to trade us materials and your labor for some of the cost of Lots.
WHAT PROJECTS ARE PLANNED TO BE BUILT IN THE NEST?
The list of these is expanding as we see needs. Here are most of them, so far:
A 300 seat conference center and an outdoor amphitheater with sound stage.
Two restaurants: A highway front restaurant with the railroad station and bed and breakfast rooms and suites. The other restaurant will be in the log lodge on the high bluff overlooking the Trinity River and be just for members. The lodge will include an indoor heated pool as well as 24 rooms and suites.
A medical clinic with skilled nursing for long term care patients. The clinic will have an ER, hyperbaric chambers, and an on staff physician. Patient's family will have cabins available during their loved ones' stay.
A missionaries-in-training boot camp.
A 5 acre lake with hand powered boating and fishing.
The railroad station (in with the highway front restaurant) for the Eagles Nest & Big Thicket Railroad with a 2 foot gauge Railroad from the highway frontage to the river front log lodge.
